Weight training is the only real way to change the shape of your
body. Losing weight through aerobic exercise will make you smaller by
burning fat but will never change your shape. You can run, walk, bicycle
or swim to lose weight but nothing changes your shape like weight,
resistance training.
Using weights in your exercise routine will reshape your body by causing your muscles to increase in size and at the same time the extra muscle mass will increase your metabolism and cause you to burn more fat while exercising, something that can not be accomplished through aerobic exercise alone.
Until I was 46 years old I was always shaped like a pear. I had small shoulders and wide hips and no matter how much I ran and watched my caloric intake, all I ever did was get smaller and just looked like a smaller pear-shaped guy. When I learned about a body transformation program called "Body For Life" I was made aware of the value of resistance training with weights. It changed my shape and changed my attitude about the value of weight training forever.
In the "Body For Life" program I learned how to eat right (5 to 6 six smaller meals a day), how much fat intake I should have for my size and the total number of calories I should consume for someone my size. I learned how to utilize short, high-intensity aerobic exercise routines to maximize my fat burning workouts. Implementing these things alone will help anyone who is overweight to lose fat and increase heart health in just a few short weeks.
But the part of this training that changed me the most was learning how to properly implement weight training to change the shape of my body. In 12 weeks I went from being pear-shaped to having wider shoulders and narrower hips by using weights in my workouts to build muscle in all the right places.
If you spend all of your fitness training doing nothing but aerobic exercise and changing your diet, your results will not change the shape of your body. You will be healthier for sure. But if you really want to look more masculine as a man or more shapely as a woman...you must use weights in your workout routines. If I had only done the aerobic part I would have just gone from an overweight pear-shaped guy to a smaller pear-shaped guy.
Another thing building muscle does for you is it increases your body's ability to burn fat with less effort and at a higher rate. For me it was able to make my shoulders look wider and my hips look smaller in comparison. I was able to achieve that "V" shape that every man really wants to develop.
